Week 6 Review Questions

  1. On the Web, the intensity of each of the primary colors is assigned a number from 0 (absence of color) to 255 (highest intensity).
  2. The JPG image format is more suitable for photographs than the GIF format.
  3. The use of the Standard or Web-Safe Palette guarantees that an image will be displayed without dithering.
  4. Discuss the differences between GIF and JPEG format graphic files. When should one be used over the other?
The GIF format usually has a smaller file size and lossless compression. It can be made transparent and supports animation. But the GIF only supports 256 colors so it is best used for images with less color variation. Photographs do not make good GIFS.

The JPEG format can be compressed and supports the full palette of 16 million colors, so it is great for photographs or high-definition images with lots of color. But the JPF format uses lossy compression and image quality is lost when it is compressed. JPEG does not support transparency nor animation
  5. What is an image map? list a situation where an image map might be effectively used.
Image maps are an image on a Web page that has "clickable" regions. Client-side image maps use pixel coordinates for each region, and when a region is clicked it acts like a link and can take you to another page. A graphic can be divided up using image map coordinates to turn it into a navigation bar.
  6. Provide an example of where you would use a Mask.
You can mask out an area of an image and then select this area, remove it from the image and place it into another image. Masks can be used to blend objects on one layer with objects on other layers.
  7. Provide and example of where you would use Layers.
Anytime you would want to create a 3D effect, where an object is on top of another object, would require using layers.
  8. What is the advantage of saving your file as a PSP file?
The PSP format does not merge layers so you can manipulate your image after it is saved, not to mention that there is no quality loss when saving the image as a PSP.
